The Italian geothermal data infrastructure, through the portal created in 2007 by the Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources of the National Research Council (CNR-IGG), provides a rich portfolio of geothermal information whose beating heart is represented by the renewed National Geothermal Data Bank (Banca Dati Nazionale Geotermici, BDNG).
The BDNG was created in 1993 by the International Institute for Geothermal Research of CNR (Istituto Internazionale per le Ricerche Geotermiche del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR-IIRG) in Pisa, upon completion of the Inventory of Geothermal Resources organised, pursuant to Law No. 896 of 1986, by the CNR, ENEA, ENEL and ENI.
GeoThopica is a useful tool for both geothermal energy and all projects based on information from the subsurface - e.g. thermal and CO2 storage, waste disposal, or the search for economically strategic minerals (e.g. lithium, rare earths) - and fits in perfectly with the research carried out by the CNR's Institute of Geosciences and Georisources, which is responsible for its coordination, management and development.
